A complete in mold labeling machine integrates label handling, robot motion, product takeout and injection molding machine communication into one automated production cell.

An in mold labeling machine places a pre-printed label inside the mold before plastic is injected and then removes the finished labeled product after molding. Unlike a conventional sticker labeling machine, the label becomes part of the plastic product during the injection molding process.

In international sourcing, the terms IML machine, automatic in mold labeling machine, in mould labelling machine, and in mold labeling system are often used for similar equipment. However, the actual quotation scope may refer only to the robot or to a complete system that includes label feeding, customized tooling, electrostatic placement, product takeout, safety guarding, and downstream automation.

Buyers should therefore define the required production process before comparing equipment. A qualified IML machine supplier should review the product dimensions, mold cavities, label material, injection molding machine, target cycle time, stacking or conveying requirements, and available factory space before recommending the final configuration.

What Is Included in an In Mold Labeling Machine?

A complete in mold labeling machine or IML automation system normally begins with a label magazine that stores and presents individual labels. The robot picks the label using customized end-of-arm tooling and transfers it into the open mold. Electrostatic or vacuum retention holds the label in the required position before injection begins.

The robot and injection molding machine must exchange signals throughout the cycle. Mold-open confirmation, robot-entry permission, ejector movement and robot-clear confirmation must be coordinated so that label placement and product takeout can be completed safely and repeatedly.

Depending on the application, the system can also include product takeout tooling, conveyors, stacking, counting, inspection, orientation, bucket-handle assembly or packing equipment. The correct scope depends on what must happen to the finished product after it leaves the mold.

How Does an In Mold Labeling Machine Work?

The operating sequence begins when the label feeding system presents a label for pickup. The robot picks and checks the label, waits for the injection molding machine to open the mold and then enters the mold area to place the label. Depending on the tooling design, the robot may also remove the finished product during the same mold-open period.

After the robot exits and sends a clear signal, the mold closes and plastic is injected behind the label. Heat and pressure bond the label to the plastic surface during molding. The completed product is then removed, transferred and processed according to the programmed automation sequence.

A reliable IML machine must balance speed with stable label separation, accurate placement, safe mold clearance and repeatable product handling. Increasing robot speed alone will not improve output if the label, mold, injection process or downstream equipment cannot operate at the same production rate.

HecosTech IML Machine Configurations for 0.1L–33L Containers

The HecosTech HT-20B can be configured as part of an in mold labeling machine for 0.1L–5L plastic containers and injection molding machines from 200T to 1000T. Typical applications include food containers, yogurt cups, detergent packaging, lubricant containers and other small-to-medium rigid plastic packaging.

For medium and large containers, the HT-20A is designed for 5L–33L applications and can also be evaluated with injection molding machines from 200T to 1000T. Applications may include paint buckets, food drums, lubricant containers, chemical packaging and household storage containers.

Can an In Mold Labeling Machine Work with Different Injection Molding Machines?

Different machine models can support very different IML applications. Universal brand compatibility does not mean applying one fixed robot configuration to every machine. Platen dimensions, tie-bar spacing, mold opening stroke, ejector sequence, robot mounting position, available space, control signals and required production cycle must still be verified. Not always. The IML robot is the main handling device that places labels and removes products. A complete in mold labeling machine may also include the label magazine, electrostatic system, customized tooling, safety guarding, machine interface, conveyor, stacking and inspection equipment.

Can an IML Machine Be Installed on an Existing Injection Molding Machine?

Yes. An existing machine can be upgraded when its mold access, opening stroke, mounting conditions, interface signals, installation space and production cycle support the required automation. HecosTech evaluates the actual injection molding machine and mold before confirming the configuration.
